Prerequisite Modules

This module describes the anatomical structures of the speech systems and their detailed functions (i.e. respiratory system, phonatory system, resonatory system, and articulatory system).

This module provides an understanding of the nervous system in general, and its role in normal and abnormal speech and language processing in particular. The neural functions relation to other cognitive process and swallowing are also discussed.

This module covers the basic components of language including phonologic, semantic, syntactic, morphologic, and pragmatic subsystems, as well as the articulatory and auditory features of Arabic sounds.

This module introduces trainees to clinical practice in speech-language pathology, and it covers the principles of assessment, application of diagnostic information, and principles of treatment in general. This module also concentrates on improving the clinical writing skills of the trainee’s (i.e. Diagnostic and progressive reports, and treatment plans).

Specialty Modules
Speech Disorders Modules

This module covers the theoretical aspects of fluency disorders (mainly developmental stuttering), theories of stuttering and its etiology, differential diagnosis, features of disfluent speech, and assessment techniques.

This module helps the trainees to demonstrate evidenced-based practice in treating fluency disorders, especially developmental stuttering, based on level and severity of the disorder. The module provides trainees with the needed skills, knowledge, and techniques that help them improve their intervention procedures.

This module focuses on normal and abnormal processes of voice production. It helps to improve trainees’ skills in evaluating neurogenic, psychogenic, and idiopathic voice disorders.

This module provides trainees with the most recent evidence-based techniques to treat neurogenic, psychogenic, and idiopathic voice disorders.

This module provides an understanding of the phonological system, its processes, and its breakdowns. The main focus of the module is on the etiology and assessment of phonological disorders to develop the trainees’ skill in this area.

This module provides an understanding of the most recent evidence-based techniques to treat phonological disorders including various approaches that improves clinical outcomes.

This module offers a discussion of communicative disorders associated with cleft lip and/or palate, as well as other craniofacial anomalies. Etiology of the disorder, assessment techniques, and evidence-based practice in the field are covered.

Language Disorders Modules

This module focuses on normal language acquisition and main theories of language development. Developmental milestones in infancy, toddlerhood, preschool, and school-age children are also covered.

This module focuses on language disorders in children from birth to age five. The module reviews etiology, best assessment techniques, effective treatment options, and evidence-based practice.

This module focuses on assessment of oral and written language development, and treatment of language disorders in school-age children and adolescents.

This module focuses on the effect of hearing loss on speech and language in children and adults, assessment of communicative needs, and intervention techniques for such populations. This module helps trainees to become more effective in guiding patients and their families toward effective communication, and monitoring their progress.

Neural-Based Disorders Modules

This module focuses on the evidence-based practice in aphasia and best techniques used to help patients according to patent’s own communicative needs. Restoration abilities and compensation strategies are covered in this module.

This module focuses on the etiology of neurogenic language disorders, the various scopes of aphasia syndromes and their classification, and the assessment techniques based on the World Health Organization’s model of disability.

This module focuses on the etiology of neurogenic speech disorders, the models of motor speech control, and the assessment of motor speech dysfunction. Trainees are also provided with the needed skills to understand the differential diagnosis of dysarthria and apraxia of speech.

This module focuses on most recent procedures and best therapeutic techniques to help patients with motor speech disorders according to evidence-based practice in the field.

This module introduces trainees to cognition and its role in communication. The module also discusses a variety of neurogenic disorders affecting cognition including right hemisphere syndromes. Trainees are provided with comprehensive understanding of the recent assessment procedures of cognition and evidence-based treatment of its disorders.

This module focuses on etiology of traumatic brain injury, consequences of brain injury, and possible effects of brain injury on human communication and cognitive processing. Trainees are provided with the most recent assessment techniques and strategies used to cope with these effects.

This module focuses on normal swallowing physiology, the common swallowing disorders including oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal phases. Etiology of swallowing disorders, evaluation methods, and treatment techniques are covered in this module.

Special Topics Modules

This module discusses the current professional issues and ethics in the field of speech pathology, as well as legal aspects of private practice management. Emphasis is placed on business issues, marketing, increasing patient’s satisfaction and customer loyalty, and improving practice quality of services to enhance financial turn over.

This module is offered in introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. The module is taught in 3-hours lectures, and 3 days a week, over 2 months for each level. The module teaches basic signs, hand parameters, and glossing system in Arabic sign language using visual comprehension, signing, and basic expressive and receptive skills. The module also uses class and extracurricular activities to teach the cultural aspects of Arabic sign language and deaf culture. In-class training requires active participation in instructor-coordinated activities as a mandatory component for completion.

This module provides comprehensive understanding of normal and abnormal human behavior. This module improves the trainees’ knowledge and skills to become more effective in applying behavioral modification theories, principles, procedures, and techniques used in clinical setup.

This module provides comprehensive understanding of clinical counseling and reviews several counseling strategies used in speech clinics. The module focuses on the counseling needs of patients, their families, and their communication partners.

This module covers the basic components of AAC, as well as its specific assessment and intervention strategies. Moreover, the operation, evaluation, and application of the technology associated with AAC are presented to trainees.

This module reviews characteristic symptoms of dyslexia, its implications, diagnostic procedures, and remediation techniques to increase the trainee’s awareness about this disorder.

This module provides intensive clinical training program over 8 weeks period designed to provide the trainee with outstanding clinical knowledge, hands-on training, and mentorship in standardized speech pathology practices that meet the trainee’s individual needs. Within the eight weeks, two weeks will be available for trainees to choose two selective topics of their interest among a variety of choices to be intensively discussed and practiced.

This module provides comprehensive understanding of the rehabilitation techniques used to help patients after surgical removal of their larynx. The module focuses on the procedures applied to improve patient’s communicative abilities, and the procedures used to maintain their laryngeal prosthesis devices.

This module provides comprehensive understanding of etiology, assessment, and treatment of communication disorder in patients with mental retardation.

This module provides comprehensive understanding of etiology, assessment, and treatment of communication disorder in patients with cerebral palsy.

This module provides comprehensive understanding of etiology, assessment, and treatment of communication disorder associated with autism and autistic spectrum disorders.
