Prerequisite Modules

This module describes the anatomical structures of the peripheral and central auditory system and their detailed functions. The peripheral anatomy includes external ear (Pinna, canal, and tympanic membrane), middle ear (ossicular mechanism, Eustachian tube, and facial nerve), and cochlear structures (cochlear amplifier, microanatomy, sensory epithelium, cochlear fluids, and vascular system). The central anatomy includes the cochlear nerve, neural transmission, afferent and efferent pathways (brainstem and midbrain) and cortical function.

This module provides an introduction to the physics of sound, the principles of acoustics, as well as the measures and properties of sound, noise, room acoustics, and ideal architectural acoustics.

This module reviews the physical, physiological, and psychological perception of sound. It provides a comprehensive understanding of psychological quantification methods of sounds and their correlation to the physical measures. Also, it explores some issues in the auditory processing of acoustic signals in normal and abnormal hearing.

Specialty Modules
Basic Evaluation Modules

This module provides comprehensive understanding of pure tone and speech audiometry, and all its collateral clinical procedures through interactive lecturing, and extensive hands-on training. This module improves the trainee’s efficiency in conducting the test as well as the pre-and-post testing procedures, to reach the best clinical quality and demonstrate the best time management.

This module provides a comprehensive training on a variety of site of lesion tests. The module covers acoustic immittance and reflectance measures, including tympanometry and acoustic reflex measures for detection of middle ear disorders and site of lesions in the auditory pathway.

This module provides an overview of the auditory development, and congenital auditory disorders. This module focuses on the audiological assessment, the clinical procedures, early intervention, (re)habilitation, and precautions needed for pediatric population, including newborns, infants, children, and their parents.

This module trains participants on conducting site of lesion procedures and evaluations, as well as identifying nonorganic (functional) hearing loss. These procedures include -but not limited to- speech rollover, supra-threshold tone decay, loudness balance, short increment sensitivity index, masking level difference, etc. This module also provides an understanding of developing comprehensive clinical procedures that suite the variety of patients seen by audiologists.

Advanced Evaluation Modules

This module explains the different types of otoacoustic emissions in detail. Trainees will receive intensive training on recording, analyzing, and interpreting otoacoustic emissions. Both screening and diagnostic applications of otoacoustic emissions are discussed, and trainees will learn how to integrate the use of otoacoustic emissions in various diagnostic procedures and clinical setups.

This module provides a comprehensive theoretical and technical understanding of the concepts related to early electrophysiological recording, as well as intensive training on recording click and tone burst auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and auditory steady state response (ASSR). This module also provides an overview of clinical aspects related to ECochG procedure.

This module provides a comprehensive theoretical and technical understanding of the concepts related to late electrophysiological recording, as well as intensive training on recording mismatch negativity (MMN) and P300 potentials using oddball paradigms. This module provides an overview of clinical aspects related to some other late potentials.

Amplification Modules

This module covers the current concepts and technology in amplification and assistive listening devices, as well as the recent developments in remediation of communication disorders related to hearing loss in adults and children.

This module provides intensive training on evaluation, selection, and fitting of hearing aids and related devices used by the hearing impaired patients. Also, the module covers verification procedures and techniques.

This module covers the most recent technical and clinical updates on various types of cochlear implants, and an understanding of the anatomical and psychological aspects, including controversial factors in pediatric implantation. This module offers intensive hands-on training on mapping software and procedures, and it includes intervention and therapy techniques for children and adults with cochlear implants.

This module focuses on the most recent technology available to assist hearing impaired patients. It provides comprehensive understanding of applying this technology to maximize patient’s benefit and improve their quality of life.

This module provides information about the effects of hearing loss on perceptual, cognitive, communicative, educational, occupational, social, and emotional aspects of life for different ages. This module also covers common assessment tools and intervention techniques associated with hearing loss and used in aural rehabilitation. Finally, participants will be trained on identifying and developing aural rehabilitation plans, habilitation resources, and recommendations for clinicians, clients, parents, families, educators, and employers.

Vestibular Evaluation Modules

This module reviews the anatomical structures and concepts related to the vestibular system and balance in general. It provides detailed understanding of the function of these anatomical structures, and comprehensive understanding of the integrated function of the balance system.

This module provides intensive theoretical content and hands-on training on conducting caloric testing and videonystagmography evaluation.

This module is designed toward mastering several clinical and diagnostic skills for evaluating vestibular disorders, especially the differentiation between central and peripheral disorders, and successfully indentifying the site of lesion.

This module discusses the available rehabilitation techniques and procedures that can be applied according to differential diagnosis of vestibular problems. This includes medical treatment methods, clinical procedures, and balance exercises.

Special Topics Modules

This module describes various aspects of central auditory processing and disorders. It covers the underlying processes of auditory processing in the central nervous system, and explains several evaluation procedures and remediation approaches used in the management of patients with central auditory disorders.

This module includes information and strategies for audiologists to improve hearing in educational settings and to improve the delivery of effective educational services in school environment. Participants will be trained to become part of a collaborative team to develop regulations, supervising audiological screening procedures, and develop conservation programs. This module focuses on the role of audiologists in educational, clinical, community service coordination, supervision, and advocacy.

This module reviews local and international standards that are applied to industrial settings and trains the audiologist to meet industrial needs and standards for sound measurement and hearing conservation. This module also focuses on the effects of noise on humans, the susceptibility and predisposing factors related to industrial noise, as well as conducting a noise survey and developing a hearing conservation plan.

This module discusses the current professional issues and ethics in the field of audiology, as well as legal and managerial aspects of private practice in audiology. Emphasis is placed on business issues, marketing, increasing patient’s satisfaction and customer loyalty, and improving practice quality of services to enhance financial turn over.

This module discusses counseling strategies used in clinical audiology. This course develops trainee’s understanding of patient’s needs in order to provide effective counseling for adults with hearing loss and families of children with hearing loss.

This module provides intensive clinical training program over 8 weeks period designed to provide the trainee with outstanding clinical knowledge, hands-on training, and mentorship in standardized audiology practices that meet the trainee’s individual needs. Within the eight weeks, two weeks will be available for trainees to choose two selective topics of their interest among a variety of choices to be intensively discussed and practiced.
